Our 2014 social enterprise survey in Nova Scotia, created and completed in partnership with ENP Canada, Mont Royal and Simon Fraser Universities, identified over 1,170 social enterprises in the province. Valid survey responses were received from 232 social enterprises, and preliminary results are available. Of course, further data collection and cleaning are yet to take place, but from a brief scan of our data, it seems like the following is true:
- In 2013, the 232 responding NS social enterprises generated at least $197.5m in income, 60% from the sale of goods and services;
- they employed at least 5,630 people, most (79%) from targeted communities;
- they trained at least for 22,960 people;
- and they had at least 3,470 volunteers.
A full report profiling the impact of the Nova Scotian social enterprise sector will be available in the coming months! Stay tuned!
